Associate Director

We are looking for an Associate Director who will oversee the operations of the fair and its sister platforms, as well as deliver our aspiration to build a global cultural brand from the heart of Africa. This role presents an opportunity to contribute to the strategic positioning and long-term development of the ART X brand stable, and to magnify our reach at home and across the world.

Key Responsibilities
  • General management of the ART X Lagos fair and its sister platforms, bringing together all departments and functions to meet the platform’s pioneering goals
  • Collaborate with the CEO on the strategic growth agenda, prioritising avenues for increased cultural impact, profitability and brand equity
  • Initiate, expand and manage end-to-end relationships with art galleries, dealers and other exhibitors, executing the year’s strategy
  • Strategic responsibility for curatorial programming – Hire and coordinate curators; support
    curators administratively, reviewing the efficacy of their plans and potential for audience engagement
  • Collaborate with and project-manage Team Leads in key departments:
    • Partnerships & Business Development – Ensure we meet our financial goals with the right brand partners
    • Storytelling & Communications – Increase brand equity with dynamic communication to our varied target audiences
    • Event Planning & Exhibition Design – Ensure superior execution across all our experiences
  • Own collector and guest relations; grow audience engagement and attendance
  • Create and maintain budgets related to exhibitions and all projects
  • Build strong relationships with key relevant stakeholders
  • Oversee the business support functions, ensuring our Legal, HR, Accounting and other Administrative requirements are proactive and efficient
About You

The ideal candidate will have a track record of successful project planning and delivery at a
strategic level. You are resilient, resourceful, flexible and able to roll up your sleeves to get the job
done. The ability to multitask, work calmly under pressure, and be a strong team player is also vital.

  • You possess excellent knowledge of the visual arts and culture sectors, with a passion to change the African narrative
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience working in the art/culture world, preferably with international experience
  • Experience executing fairs, festivals and/or large exhibitions is a significant advantage
  • Experience living and working in multicultural environments; truly a global citizen
  • Ambidextrous and flexible, with strong interpersonal skills – you can build rapport with creatives and people of varied backgrounds, to get the best out of them
  • Extremely organised and detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Strong leadership, sound judgment, and diplomacy skills
  • Able to influence and negotiate with senior stakeholders, sponsors, and external agencies/stakeholders

Role Specifications

This person will work remotely (preferably from a location compatible with GMT and WAT time zones), and must be flexible to travel to Lagos during key periods, with stays for 2 – 3 months.
